Toyota shifts into overdrive: Developing an AI platform for enhanced manufacturing efficiency

Toyota Motor CorporationGoogle Cloud · Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) · GKE Enterprise +6

Toyota's Production Digital Transformation Office built an in-house AI Platform on a Google Cloud hybrid architecture that lets factory floor employees create machine learning models without AI expertise, automating manual, labor-intensive tasks. Built by a six-person team in about 1.5 years, the platform runs at all 10 Toyota car and unit manufacturing factories; the number of models created rose from 8,000 in 2023 to 10,000 in 2024, saving over 10,000 man-hours per year, with nearly 1,200 active users and 400+ trained annually.

Overview

Toyota's Production Digital Transformation Office built an in-house AI Platform on a Google Cloud hybrid architecture that lets factory floor employees create machine learning models without AI expertise, automating manual, labor-intensive tasks. Built by a six-person team in about 1.5 years, the platform runs at all 10 Toyota car and unit manufacturing factories; the number of models created rose from 8,000 in 2023 to 10,000 in 2024, saving over 10,000 man-hours per year, with nearly 1,200 active users and 400+ trained annually.

The challenge

Certain parts of Toyota's production system were resistant to conventional automation. Toyota began experimenting with AI internally in 2018, but a shortage of employees with the expertise required for AI development created a bottleneck in promoting its wider use, leaving manual, labor-intensive tasks unaddressed.

The solution

Toyota's Production Digital Transformation Office, formed in 2022, built an in-house AI Platform on a hybrid architecture combining on-premises infrastructure with Google Cloud, using a microservices-based architecture and agile SCRUM development so factory floor employees, regardless of AI expertise, can create machine learning models. A six-person team built and deployed the platform in about 1.5 years. Learning models are created on N1 VMs with NVIDIA T4 GPUs and A2 VMs with NVIDIA A100 GPUs, with builds run via Cloud Build, container images verified with Artifact Registry and Container Analysis, and security ensured with Binary Authorization.

Reported business value

The AI Platform is estimated to save as many as 10,000 hours of mundane work annually. The number of models created in manufacturing rose from 8,000 in 2023 to 10,000 in 2024. GKE's Image Streaming reduced learning model creation time by 20%. The platform now runs at all 10 Toyota car and unit manufacturing factories, active users have grown to nearly 1,200, and more than 400 employees participate in in-house training programs each year.

Martur Fompak International Boosts Throughput and Efficiency with Intelligent Robotics Enabled by Joule and Embodied AI

Martur Fompak International, a global automotive seating and interior systems manufacturer, deployed an autonomous intralogistics model using SAP's Joule solution and embodied AI capabilities, partnering with UK-based robotics company Humanoid. Built on SAP S/4HANA and SAP Extended Warehouse Management, the system gives humanoid robots and autonomous mobile robots real-time knowledge of tasks, storage locations, sequencing and production priorities, letting them identify, transport and deliver materials to the production line while continuously confirming actions back into SAP systems. The company has 400 daily production line feeds with 100% SAP software-driven decision making. Early results show increased throughput and fewer errors, with a future target of up to five times greater work efficiency for mass production. Martur Fompak International was named sole winner in the AI Excellence category at the 2026 SAP Innovation Awards.
